One of the longest and largest river of Nepal is Koshi (कोशी). It has length of about 729 km. Koshi is a river which flows from Tibet to Nepal then to India. As the river consists of seven big other rivers, it is also called Saptakoshi after crossing Chatara Ghat.
The river originating from Kanchenjunga named Tamor in the east to Arun and Sunkoshi (Bhotekoshi) are same big tributaries of Koshi and other tributaries are Dhuhkoshi, Tamakoshi, Likhu Khola and Indrawati.
Koshi becomes destructive in rainy season. If gets flooded and sweeps away lots of houses, crops and many more from Nepal to Bihar, India. Due to this reason, it is also known as sorrow of Bihar.
It almost covers 729 km length and occupies around 74,500 sq.km area. After reaching India Kamala, Bagmati and Gandak also joins Koshi as a tributary and they join Ganges at last.
We can find lots of fishes in this river. Many people also used to depend on fishery for living. But these days the number of fishes have decreased relatively which is making youths attracted to other jobs.
A bridge with doors to control water flow is made at the India-Nepal border named as Koshi Barrage which consists of 52 doors. It is also known as Bhimnagar Barrage. It is used to block or divert the water to canal which is used for irrigation in different parts of India.
It was made from 1959 to 1963 AD. All the cost was beared by India. In the eastern side around 3km down 20mw electricity is generated. Likewise the barrage consists of a bridge which connects east-west highway.
Koshi tappu wildlife conservation which lies in eastern part of Nepal is adjoined with the River. It covers around 175 sq.km area and is a habitat for lots of rare creatures. It was established in 1976 AD Lots of birds as well as animals are found here.
