Five lakes in the world at the highest altitude.

You can find lots of lakes in your place or nearby you. Here are the list of five lakes that are situated in the highest altitude (नेपाली: विश्वका उच्च स्थानमा रहेका पाँच ताल). These lakes are formed in several ways like glaciers, tectonic plate movement, river and wind currents.

When the glacier melt, water fills the depressions forming lakes and mostly located in mountainous region and higher altitude. Let’s check out some of the lakes at the highest altitude that are truly the most picturesque location on earth. Let’s start…

5. In at number five we have;

Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal is a rift lake located in Russia situated in southern Siberia between the federal subject of Irkutsk Oblast to northwest and Buryatia to the southeast. With 23615.39 km³of water lake Baikal is the world’s largest fresh water lake by volume containing 23% of world’s fresh surface water and more than all North American great lakes combined.

It is the world’s deepest lake with the maximum depth of 1642 m and world’s oldest lake with 25-30 million years. At 31722 km² slightly larger than Belgium it is the world’s seventh largest lake by surface area. Lake Baikal is rich in biodiversity.

It hosts 1000 types of plants and 2500 species of animals based on current knowledge but actual knowledge is believed to be significantly higher. More than 80% of animals are endemic. Lake Baikal is nicknamed “older sister of sister lakes”. 

4. In at number four we have;

Gurudongmar lake

Gurudongmar lake is one of the highest lake in the world in the Indian state Sikkim. It is considered sacred by Buddhist, Sikhs and Hindus. The lake is named after guru Padmasambhava, also known as guru Rinpoche- founder of Tibetan Buddhism.

The lake fed by glacier is located to north of Kanchenjunga range, in high plateau area connected with Tibetan plateau. It provides one of source streams to Teesta river. In winter the lake remains completely frozen from November to mid May. The lake has an area of 118 hectors and it’s peripheral length is 5.34 km.

The lake is fresh water and used to be very clear. The bed of lake could even been seen from middle of the lake but pollution has increased in such a way that the water is muddied and the visibility is obscured.

3. In at number three we have;

Pangong lake

Pangong lake or Pangong Tso is an endoheric lake spanning eastern Ladakh and western Tibet. It is 134 km long and divided in five sub lakes called as Pangong Tso, Tso Nyak, Rum Tso (twin lakes) and Nyak Tso.

Approximately 50% of the lake lies in Tibet and 40% in Ladakh and rest is disputed and is de-facto buffer zone between India and China. The lake is 5 km wide at it’s broadest point. Altogether it covers about 604 km².

During winter the lake freezes completely. As the lake us in disputed territory the line of actual control passes from the lake. A section of the lake approximately 20 km east from actual control is controlled by China but claimed by India. The eastern end of lake is in Tibet.

Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is a large, deep, freshwater lake in Andes on border of Bolivia and Peru, often called highest navigable lake in world. By volume of water and surface area, it is the largest lake in South America.

The highest navigable lake claim is generally considered to refer to commercial craft. Numerous smaller bodies of water around the world are at higher elevations.

The lake has had a number of steamships, each of which built in united kingdom in “knock down” form with bolts and nuts, disassembled into many hundred of pieces, transported to lake and then riveted and launched.

Tilicho lake

Tilicho lake is a lake located in Manang district of Nepal, 55 km as crow flies from Pokhara. Lake Tilicho is situated at an altitude of 4,949 m from sea level according to Nepali department of hydrology and meteorology.

Tilicho lake is destination of one of the most popular side hike of Annapurna circuit trek. Tilicho lake was a site of the highest ever altitude scuba dives. Hindus believe that Tilicho lake is ancient Kak Bhusundi lake mentioned in epic Ramayana.
